Gmail locks me out daily for READING my mail too quickly.
Gmail locks me out of my email every day for reading my email too quickly. And I am using the paid Google Apps version of email!
Here’s how it happens. I use a service that send me lots of email every day. Sort of like Google Alerts. I quickly read that email and scan it for stuff I care about. Like clockwork, I get locked out of my account after a few dozen messages. This bug is completely repeatable. Today, I got locked out twice: the first time out on message 23, the second time on message 35.
The error message:
Account Lockdown: Unusual Activity Detected
This account has been locked down due to unusual account activity. It may take up to 24 hours for you to regain access.
Unusual account activity includes, but is not limited to:
1. Receiving, deleting, or downloading large amounts of mail via POP in a short period of time.
2. Sending a large number of undeliverable messages (messages that bounce back).
3. Using file-sharing or file-storage software, browser extensions, or third party software that automatically logs in to your account.
4. Leaving multiple instances of your Gmail account open.
5. Browser-related issues. Please note that if you find your browser continually reloading while attempting to access your Inbox, it’s probably a browser issue, and it may be necessary to clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
If you feel that you have been using your Gmail account according to the Gmail Terms of Use, you can troubleshoot your problem by clicking here.
This is complete insanity. I am not doing any of the things in the error message that would justify getting locked out of my paid account. Furthermore, I can “fix” the problem by restarting my browser and logging in to Gmail again.
Dear Google, please fix this problem.
I got locked out today and I have no idea why. I wasn’t even on my computer for hours and when I went to check email, I had the same message. I am using the paid storage feature and use this for all of my business emails. There is no way to even figure out how to contact Eric Schmidt if I wanted to – although after spending hours trying to figure out how to contact them, I’m sure I would get some canned message from them. I’m about ready to open up an MSN account now. Bill Gates must be redeemed by now.
This is rediculous. I too am being locked out of gmail several times a day and all of my work goes through gmail. This is costing me alot of lost business and they are not even considerate enough to provide a customer support phone number. This is the stupidest company ever. I am furious because I am loosing so much money every minute that I am locked out. Can someone please tell them to get their shit together. Why do we have to put up with this? It is rediculous and I have done nothing wrong.

I have been locked out of my account for over 24 hours! I was deleting old messages, because my inbox was full and wouldn’t let me receive any more mail, and I get the same message. I have waited over 24 hours and still am not able to log in! I use this email address for work and just this one day has caused some major backlash with clients. (I assume, I don’t even know what they said yet because I can’t check my mail!) I am so disappointed in Google for being so vague on this issue!
I too am having that problem, but it is probably because I keep Gmail open at my office, my home and on my Nokia cell phone. Is this a new thing? It has never happened to me before and it is getting to be a major pain in the arse! We were planning on moving to Google Voice for an office telephone system this week, but now I am reconsidering.
I am getting so frustrated with Google over this issue. I use Googlemail for business and it is locking down more and more frequently. I don’t believe I read my lails too quickly (whatever that means….), and Google just refuse to answer any questions.
I am looking for an alternative supplier – anyone know of an email provider that you can set up multi email addresses?
Thanks
It happens to me when people send far too many attachements in one message. They think they’re clever and split them up, but keep the same header. Gmail sees this as one message, wand there we go again.
Some will comment that this is not their problem, and they will get quite rude.
How can it be fixed without asking users to be computer experts?
I don’t know if I was so quick, but I was leving webmail opened in boh chrome and firefox and after about 15 hours of lock, I?m again waiting.
Same here. I was just saving some files when Gmail automatically locked me out. And the workaround doesn’t work for me as usual.
I have this problem too. It is really annoying.
Here’s a work-around for this bug. Turn off images in Firefox to avoid having Gmail go into “account lockdown” mode when you read messages “too quickly.” So when I have a batch of emails to read quickly, I turn off images. When I’m done, I turn images back on. Annoying, but it works.
