* American Idol Top 9 Preview

Erik admits to enjoying American Idol.

OK, I admit it. I enjoy watching American Idol on Fox, and it’s on tonight (8:00-9:00 PM ET). In fact, it’s a popular topic during our lunchtime at work. And I think we’re getting pretty good about predicting the results. Tonight’s theme is country music. Here are my thoughts on how it’ll play out.

I don’t listen to (or enjoy) country music, but I am able to separate my personal preferences how I judge the performances. Some of the judges will not be able to do the same, I predict, and some performers will get negative feedback as a result.

The conventional wisdom says that those whose chosen genre is country (Bucky Covington, Kellie Pickler) will have an easy week. I think that Bucky and Kellie have the most to lose, because expectations are so high.

I expect that Chris Daughtry and Taylor Hicks will have no trouble adopting their singing styles (rock and soul, respectively) to the country genre. Similarly, I expect Katharine McPhee to sing well but to perform in a forgettable manner.

I expect that Elliott Yamin, Ace Young, Paris Bennett, and Mandisa Hundley will have the most trouble tonight.

FWIW, here is the order I predict the top 9 will finish overall.

1. Taylor Hicks
2. Chris Daughtry
3. Kellie Pickler
4. Mandisa Hundley
5. Paris Bennett
6. Katharine McPhee
7. Bucky Covington
8. Elliott Yamin
9. Ace Young
