PETA offered the German city of Hamburg 10,000 euros to change its name to ‘Veggieburg.’
On 04/28/03, the German chapter of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) offered the German city of Hamburg 10,000 euros (about $10,000) to change its name to “Veggieburg” (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/030428/80/dypbw.html). The city name “Hamburg” comes from the old Saxon words “ham” (bay) and “burg” (fortress). Although Hamburg declined the offer, PETA received a lot of free press. But, as of this writing, “veggieburg” is untrademarked, and the domain name “veggieburg.com” is unregistered.
