1. HOW TO GET THE LEGAL LIST
-----------------------------
1.1 If you wish the receive the latest version of The Legal List,
send a message to legal-list@***.maine.***. Include the words
"legal list" either as the subject of the message or in the body
of the message.
1.2 If you wish to be added to The Legal List Mailing List, send
a message to legal-list-request@***.maine.***, and include the
following text, without the quotations, in the body of the
message: "subscribe someone@somewhere.something" where
someone@somewhere.something is your domain/MX (preferable) or non-
MX Internet e-mail address. Updates will be mailed periodically
to this mailing list. To cancel your subscription to this list,
send a message to legal-list-request@***.maine.***, and include
the following text, without the quotations, in the body of the
message: "signoff someone@somewhere.something".
1.3 Updates, additions, and corrections to The Legal List should
be sent to legal-list@***.maine.***.
1.4 The Legal List is available via anonymous ftp from:

list.txt;
and ***.midnight.com (Midnight Networks) as /legal/legal-list.txt.
2. OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE
------------------------
2.1 The purpose of The Legal List is to provide a consolidated
list of all of the resources available on the Internet and beyond
that may be of interest to those people who are involved in legal
education, legal practice, or to those who have a general interest
in legal issues.
2.2 The Legal List is one of many resources officially documented
(as section3-***) in The Internet Resource Guide, which is
compiled by the NSF Network Systems Center at BBN Systems and
Technologies Corporation. Send a message to nnsc@nnsc.nsf.net to
find out how to get a copy of The Internet Resource Guide. The
Guide is invaluable, and everyone with a serious interest in the
Internet should maintain a copy. The NNSC's stated goal is "...to
expose users to those facilities that will help them do their work
better." [Internet Resource Guide, Introduction, dated 16 Apr
90.] We wholeheartedly agree with this goal. We also rely on the
Internet community to furnish us with updates, additions, and
corrections to The Legal List.
2.3 The editors of The Legal List have made reasonable efforts to
provide correct information, but neither the University of Maine
School of Law nor Midnight Networks is responsible for the
accuracy of the information in The Legal List.
2.4 A certain level of familiarity with the Internet is assumed
by the editors of The Legal List. For information on how to get
introductory Internet information, see section ***. For
information on how to get introductory UUCP information, see
section ***. For introductory BITNET information, see section 6.1.
3. INTERNET FTP RESOURCES
--------------------------
3.1 Some resources are available via anonymous ftp. If you do
not have access to ftp, but you do have e-mail access, send a
message to ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com with "help" in the body of the
body of the message for information on their "ftp by e-mail"
service.
3.2 U.S. Supreme Court decisions are available online as part of
"Project Hermes." On May 11th, 1990 the United States Supreme
Court announced that it was beginning a two-year experimental
program with the objective to rapidly provide copies of the
Court's opinions in electronic form to as wide an audience as
possible.
One of the twelve participants is a noncommercial, nonprofit,
consortium composed of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU),
EDUCOM, and the National Public Telecomputing Network (NPTN). You
will now be able to receive electronically the full text of the
Court's opinions within minutes of their release--free.
You may have the Court's opinions sent directly to you if you have
access to either a BITNET or Internet computer (many, if not most,
major universities are connected to one service or the other); or
you may download the files directly from any NPTN community
computer system. To receive more information on how to sign-up
for the BITNET/Internet service, or if you would like to know more
about accessing these files on an NPTN community computer, please
send your name, organization or firm, address, city, state, and
zip, to: PROJECT HERMES, CWRU COMMUNITY TELECOMPUTING LAB, 319
WICKENDEN BUILDING, CLEVELAND, OHIO 44106.

The consortium grants permission to download, reproduce, or re-
post any of the Supreme Court opinion files PROVIDED NO CHANGES OR
EDITING ARE MADE TO THE SUBJECT MATERIAL.
The consortium would greatly appreciate it if source credit were
given to CWRU, EDUCOM, and the National Public Telecomputing
Network if these files are used.
3.2.1 The following list contains some of the anonymous ftp

4. INTERNET TELNET RESOURCES
-----------------------------
4.1 Many library catalogs are available online. These are
described in detail in Chapter 2 of The Internet Resource Guide
(see Section 2.2 of this list.). ***[need to know which of these

4.2 Access to The Library of Congress is described in Section
2.22 of The Internet Resource Guide (see Section 2.2 of this
list.). In short, to access the system, telnet to dra.com
(192.65.218.43). Only two guest users are allowed access between
8:00 am and 5:00 pm Central Time.
5. USENET NEWSGROUPS

6. BITNET LISTSERV GROUPS
--------------------------
6.1 BITNET overview. BITNET is an electronic communication
network linking institutional and departmental computers at 550
participating Corporation for Research and Educational Networking
(CREN) Members and Affiliates in the United States, including
universities, colleges, and collaborating research centers. With
its Cooperating Networks in other countries, BITNET is part of a
single logical network connecting more than 3300 mini- and
mainframe computers in about 1400 organizations spanning 46
countries, for the electronic exchange of non-commercial
information among its participants in support of research and
education.
BITNET is operated by the Corporation for Research and Educational
Networking, a non-profit membership corporation, which also
operates CSNET. Day-to-day operations and support are provided by
the BITNET Network Information Center located at EDUCOM and funded
through CREN membership fees.

6.1 Many interest groups exist on BITNET. A central computer
maintains the list of subscribers to a particular interest
groups, and when you mail to this computer (the LISTSERV program),
LISTSERV mails your message to the subscribers. In this way, the
membership list need only be maintained in one location. The
following BITNET LISTSERV interest groups are of a legal nature:
6.1.1 INT-LAW (Foreign and International Law Librarians) is a
list on for librarians and others interested in exchanging
information related to foreign, comparative and international
legal materials and issues.
Selected topics in the six months since INT-LAW began include the
READEX CD-ROM Index to United Nations documents, databases
containing information on foreign and international law, the
"European Court Reports", sources of information on careers in
international law, GATT panel reports, the "National Trade Data
Bank" CD-ROM, etc. INT-LAW came up on April 31, 1991.

6.1.2 LAWSCH-L is a forum to discuss matters of concern which
affect all law students; it is also designed to allow for
interaction between students and law schools to lessen the gap
between them. The list is based at American University Law

7.1 Many Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) sites of a legal nature
exist, including private BBSs, commercial BBSs, and Government

Justice, the US Navy Judge Advocate General, the American Bar

receive the Request For Comments (RFC) which is Questions and
Answers for New Internet Users. This service is documented in
Section 3.16 of The Internet Resource Guide (see Section 2.2 of
this list.).
9.2 The following book is an excellent introduction to UUCP and
USENET: "Using UUCP and USENET" by Grace Todino, published by
O'Reilly & Associates, Inc., ISBN 0-937175-10-2. This is one of
